ECSI Memorial Lectures

Professor T. L. Rama Char Memorial Lecture
(Instituted 1989)

Professor T. L. Rama Char founded the Electrochemical Society of India as the India Section of the Electrochemical Society, USA, in the year 1954, while he was a Professor at the Department of inorganic and Physical Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science. At the time he was one of the very few active scientists working in the area of Alloy Plating. He was the originator of the Sulpahammate Bath for plating alloys of iron and nickel. Later in the year 1962 realising the growing interest and activity in Electrochemical Research in the Country, he foresaw the need for an independent association for promoting the interests of Electrochemical Science and Technology in the Country and founded the ELECTROCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA, which was incorporated as a Society under the Societies Act, and formally registered with the Registrar of Societies in the state of Karnataka on 12 August 1962. If interested in seeing the original document of registration, click here. Prof. Rama Char breathed his last in February 1988. The Governing Council of ECSI, while condoling the death of Prof. Rama Char, resolved to perpetuate his memory by Instituting a Memorial Lecture Series, and decided to hold it concurrent with the Annual Convention every year. The Memorial lecture has been organized ever since and the following is the list of persons who have given this memorial lecture since inception.

(Instituted 2003)

Professor S. M. Mayanna is one of the Past Presidents of the Electrochemical Society of India. He has been an active Professor at the Central College, Bangalore and a very active member of ECSI. With a view to improve interaction between students and Professors and Scientists who have achieved name and fame, he instituted this Endowment Lecture Series through ECSI with the condition that the lecture be organized on an annual basis and if possible in a College or a University to benefit the students. The following is a list of speakers who have delivered this Endowment lecture since its inception.

Professor B. S. Seshadri Memorial Lecture
(Instituted 2003)

Professor B. S. Seshadri, one of the Past Presidents of ECSI and a very active member of the Society was always concerned about the lack of enthusiasm among students. Often, he used to mention that teachers are not interested in seeing the students learn well and prosper. He therefore thought that there must be greater interaction among students and those who have achieved name and fame. He therefore instituted an endowment lecture by providing the seed fund and laid down the condition that ECSI organize a lecture annually on or around the Teacher’s day in a college or a University on topics of interest to ECSI. After his sudden passing away during a Conference in Mangalore, the Society resolved to condole the death of Professor Seshadri and also to continue the lecture series in his name as a Memorials to him.
